Texas Mom Fighting Back After School District Demands $7K For Bullying Records

Published on

Texas mother fights back after being told by her school district to pay $7,000 for bullying records. She is investigating harassment against her son.

Terrie Chumchal joined “America’s Newsroom”, Tuesday with Warren Norred, her attorney. They discussed her case and the efforts to get the Texas attorney-general involved.

Chumchal stated, “As a parent I have every right know what’s happening in the school and why our son isn’t safe in the school district.”

According to Chumchal’s family, Chumchal’s 13 year-old son was subject to two years of verbal as well as physical bullying. The bullying was directed at his Korean-American heritage. Chumchal requested public records from the Joshua Independent School District last month to determine the number of incidents, assaults, police, and grievance reports filed between 2015-2022.

According to The Daily Wire, lawyers for the district said that it doesn’t have any “existing documentation reflecting a total amount” or “the resources necessary to run an automatic search for reports.” Manually retrieving 6,636 pages and redacting all confidential data would set you back $7,111.12.

Chumchal’s lawyer argued that getting the records “shouldn’t cost a dime” but that Chumchal and his family “cannot get away without them.” Now, the family is asking the state to intervene and filing an appeal with the Texas Attorney General’s Office challenging the high fee.

Norred stated that “These numbers have to be compiled, and given to Texas Education Agency every other year regardless.” “Most of the work should have been done already.”

Chumchal stated that the administration has not shown sympathy to her family and “wants turn a blind eye to the situation.”

She stated, “I believe that the school must provide a safe environment for all students, not just mine.”

Chumchal stated that her son doesn’t want to leave school, where he has many friends, despite the bullying.

Norred stated, “I would like to make sure people understand that it takes parents standing up like Terrie… and saying, ‘You can’t do this until a parent steps in.”
