Monday’s decry by Sen. Lindsey Graham of a “wholesale effort” by progressives to oppose Judge J. Michele Childs – his preferred Supreme Court choice – and support Judge Ketanji Jackson, whom President Biden ultimately chose.

These comments seemed to be a pretext for Graham (R-S.C.), who voted for many Biden’s judicial picks to oppose Jackson’s elevation around one year after he voted for her to be on the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals.

“So you claim, Judge Jackson that you don’t have any judicial philosophy per se?” Graham, R-S.C., said. “Well, someone on the left thinks you do. Or they wouldn’t spend the money to get you in this chair.”

“It does matter that Judge Childs was aided by groups. How did this happen? Why were they doing that?” Graham stated. Graham said.

Graham opposing Jackson narrows Democrats’ margin of error in the 50-50 Senate. Experts expect that all 50 Democrats will support Jackson.

Graham supported Childs’ appointment to the Supreme Court, even though the White House was still trying to decide who to replace Stephen Breyer, the retiring Supreme Court Justice. He lavishly praised Childs who, like Jackson, is Black and predicted that many Republicans would vote for her.

Rep. Jim Clyburn (D-S.C.), who was a key figure in Biden’s campaign, also supported Childs. Senator Tim Scott, R.S.C. indicated that he would support Childs if she was nominated.

Some progressives were against Childs because they feared she wasn’t liberal enough, especially on labor issues.

Graham Monday took exception at what he called “vicious attacks against Childs”. He said that he would ask Jackson to explain why progressives had so strongly supported Childs and not Childs.

“This game is especially disturbing to me because there has been a wholesale effort by the left to remove a nominee from mine state. Graham stated that he didn’t like the idea. “I will have a reply and I don’t expect it to reward this way of playing the game.”
